Exploring Queensland’s Waterfalls and the Beauty of K’gari Island
Over the past two months we have been travelling through Queensland and soaking up the tropical lifestyle. The warm weather has been beautiful although the humidity has definitely taken some getting used to.
One of the highlights of our Qld road trip has been discovering the state’s incredible waterfalls, swimming holes, and freshwater creeks. Some of our favourite natural attractions included Natural Bridge, Purling Brook Falls, Barron Falls, Millstream Falls, Millaa Millaa Falls, Babinda Boulders, and Mossman Gorge.
Natural Bridge was particularly special for Pete, who used to swim there as a teenager and jump through the arch. We also hiked to the base of Purling Brook Falls which was well worth the effort.
The standout destination of the trip so far has been K’gari Island, a World Heritage-listed paradise and the largest sand island in the world.
Driving 40 kms along the beach to our campsite at Eurong was an experience in itself, with endless ocean views and sand tracks stretching into the distance. One of the most fun experiences was floating down Eli Creek on inflatable tubes. As the largest freshwater creek on the island’s east coast the water is beautifully clear and refreshing. Lake McKenzie was another unforgettable stop, with its crystal clear water and stunning white silica sand, making it one of Australia’s most unique natural destinations.
Before this trip I knew very little about K’gari, but it has completely exceeded my expectations. It’s an incredibly beautiful and special place, and I would highly recommend adding it to your travel list.
