Northern Territory-What an Adventure!
After an incredible few weeks exploring the Northern Territory, it’s time for us to head west - but not before reflecting on what has been a fantastic chapter of our travels.
The NT has delivered spectacular scenery, beautiful campsites, amazing hikes, refreshing swims and plenty of those moments that remind you just how incredible Australia is.
This year’s severe wet season did throw a few curveballs our way. A number of areas remained closed or opened much later than usual, which restricted our movements and meant we had to rethink some of our plans. One of the biggest decisions was not venturing into Kakadu this time around.
While we were disappointed to miss it, there was certainly no shortage of amazing places to explore.
Nitmiluk National Park and Edith Falls
One of our real highlights was Nitmiluk National Park.
Edith Falls was simply beautiful, with some fantastic hikes and magical views along the way. After walking through the dusty landscape, there was nothing better than cooling off with a swim.
It was one of those places where you could easily have stayed much longer.
Litchfield National Park
Litchfield was another absolute favourite.
We explored Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole and Wangi Falls, with plenty of opportunities for hiking and swimming along the way. Each place has its own character, and all of them were spectacular.
Being able to camp within the National Park was an added bonus. Having these incredible swimming holes and waterfalls so close meant we could enjoy them without spending hours driving back and forth.
Berry Springs
Berry Springs was another place we enjoyed.
It was busy, but the springs are large enough that even with plenty of other visitors around, it never felt overcrowded. We could spread out, and enjoy a relaxing day in the warm water.
Definitely one to put on the list if you’re travelling through the area.
A Hidden Gem in Pine Creek
We also have to mention The Shed at Pine Creek.
Located at the Lazy Lizard Tavern, this impressive car and motorbike museum is well worth stopping for. We weren’t expecting to find such an interesting collection there, and it turned out to be a great little surprise along the way. Thanks Tara and Malcolm for the tip off.
Sometimes it’s the unexpected stops that become part of the best travel memories.
Back to Darwin
It’s been more than 25 years since Pete and I lived in Darwin, so returning after all that time has been quite an experience.
There have obviously been plenty of changes, but it was wonderful to come back and see the place again. We’re loved our time in the Top
End and are leaving with plenty of great memories.
One thing for sure - we definitely won’t be waiting another 25 years before coming back!
For now, though, another chapter begins…
