Week 14: Wind, Cows, and Kelpies
This week, we finished the NC500 route and reached the very top of Scotland at Dunnet Head. It was incredibly windy - so windy, in fact, that we saw a waterfall blowing backwards! The coastline was wild and unbelievable, definitely a moment we won’t forget.
We also saw our first Highland cow (or coo, depending on how local you’re feeling). They really do have the best hair!
On the way back South, we stopped at the William Wallace Monument - a great place to take in some history and amazing views of where the Battle of Stirling Bridge was held in 1297, it makes you want to rewatch Braveheart.
Then we headed to Falkirk to see the Kelpies, two giant horse sculptures that look even more magical at night. Since sunset in Scotland doesn’t happen until around 10.30pm this time of year, we decided to stay overnight in the car park just to see them lit up. It was totally worth it - they look incredible glowing in the dark.
Before crossing back into England, we made a final stop at Hadrian’s Wall and one of the old Roman forts. An interesting way to end the week.
We have absolutely loved Scotland - beautiful landscapes, ancient history, wild Scottish weather - we have loved every minute.
That ends our time in the UK, next week we continue our journey with a ferry over to Europe!
